Whether it's your first solo trip or you're a seasoned solo dweller, as much as you're excited to explore your next destination, the most important thing to having a good time on your travels is being safe. I don't know about you, but I take my safety seriously, especially when traveling. So here are ten essential tips for safety when traveling solo.

1. Prep Solo Trip

  • Research, research, research. If you're planning a trip, plan for one to three months and get an idea of what type of trip you want to take.

  • Create an Itinerary. Once you've done the research for your trip, creating a detailed itinerary can be helpful. Now, I know sometimes things don't go as planned, but having an idea of what to do on your trip can ease your mind— unless you like to travel spontaneously.

  • Pack safety items. Depending on your trip, pack safety items related to your journey. For example, if you're planning a trip that requires hiking, pack a flashlight, first aid kit, power bank, bear spray, etc. And if you're planning a trip to a new city, pack some pepper spray and a portable door lock for added security for your hotel room or Airbnb.

2. Securing Your Accommodation

  • Choosing a safe option for your stay. Regarding hotel rooms and Airbnb, you should research potential places to stay. Is the place you're considering staying in a safe neighborhood? Is it a clean hotel? Look at the reviews of the hotels and Airbnb you're considering.

3. Staying Connected and Informed

  • Utilize travel apps and technology. Download a travel safety app on your phone that shares your location with your loved ones, such as bSafe, Noonlight, etc.

  • Maintain communication with your loved ones. Keep your family and friends posted on your journey, whether through a phone call or posting photos through a text. It helps ease the minds of each other.

4. Navigating Transportation Safely

  • If you're planning on using rideshare apps, be sure to screenshot your rideshare details and text your family and friends; that way, they'll have your driver's information: their name, make and model of car, and their license plate number.

  • If you're using public transportation, plan your route in advance and stay aware of your surroundings. If you're carrying a backpack, consider carrying your bag in front of you to prevent pickpocketing. Pack only the essentials and minimize expensive items to bring.

  • Drive safe. Whether renting a car or driving your own, be alert on the road. Pay attention to signs, traffic, pedestrians, and streets. When visiting a new city and state, their roads can be different from your home town.

5. Protect Your Belongings

  • Invest in anti-theft accessories. Consider investing in a waist or RDIF wallet when carrying your money or credit cards, which will protect your credit cards from being scanned remotely. You can also invest in an anti-theft backpack with slash-resistant material and many hidden zippers.

6. Managing Your Health and Wellness

  • Rest and sleep well. I know you're excited about your trip, but when I travel, I find my vacations much more enjoyable when I'm well-rested. I focus more throughout the day and am more energized to enjoy activities.

  • Plan accordingly. Don't overdo it. Pace yourself on your journey. I know it can be exciting, whether it's your first time traveling solo or not; trying to do too much at once can be overwhelming.

  • You're not alone. Traveling solo, especially for the first time, can make you feel a little anxious, but don't worry if you feel lonely or anxious; stay in touch with family and friends on your trip, and send pictures of the fantastic time you're having.

7. Socializing Safely as a Solo Traveler

  • Your tour guide awaits. Whenever I travel solo, I look at different tours offered in the city I'm visiting. If you're an introvert like me, this is one of my favorite and easiest ways to meet new people, especially regarding tours of interest to you.

  • Keep your guard up. Practice situational awareness. Listen to your intuition. If something seems off to you, calmly remove yourself from the situation.

8. Keep Emergency Contacts Handy

  • Keep a list of the local emergency numbers, police, ambulance, etc.

  • Carry a card with your accommodation's name, address, and contact information, especially if you're traveling overseas.

9. Embrace Cultural Sensitivity

  • World tour. Speaking of overseas, most countries are different from the states. If you're planning on using your passport, be sure to research and understand the etiquette and customs of the country you're visiting.

10. Empowering Yourself Through Self-Defense

  • Everybody was kung-fu fighting!!! Not to scare anyone reading this by saying you will become a victim of assault, but practicing basic self-defense techniques can bring a sense of confidence within yourself when traveling alone. Plus, it's always better to stay prepared.

Conclusion

Well, there you have it: ten essential safety tips for solo travelers. These tips will be helpful to solo travelers, whether it's your first journey or you're a seasoned dweller. Wherever you travel, just remember to be safe and have a wonderful time. Happy Travels.
